Precious (movie for Price)

  1. In this film the teacher builds a rapport with her students on the first day of class. The students are all at risk for academic failure and come from underprivileged backgrounds. Many would assume that there is no hope for these students and some have already given up on them. For the first time, they (this student- precious in particular) are introduced to a completely different type of environment where the teacher demonstrates they matter and can be successful. The student Precious is illiterate, a rape and physical abuse Vitim, teen mother, poor, and overweight. Although out of her comfort zone, precious speaks out about herself for the first time and feels recognized and a part of something. The teacher provided her with the opportunity by creating a friendly and caring environment. She also helped precious feel important when she stated "everyone does something well". This film demonstrates the importance of student-teacher relationships. It also demonstrates how the first few minutes of meeting a student is an important opportunity to begin establishing a positive relationship with your students and how it can impact their lives. Despite having the odds stacked against her, this student was able to change her life around with the help of a teacher. Although the teacher could not change all of the circumstances the student faced outside the classroom, she never gave up on her student and went above and beyond to ensure her student achieved her goals. This is an example of how much power teachers have when dealing with students from all backgrounds.
